Everglades City is about as close to nature as you can get, and we can help you with any outdoor activity you wish to engage in while you’re here! Our knowledgeable and friendly staff will gladly work with you to come up with a fun-filled itinerary and help you secure any licenses and permits you may need to maximize your stay with us.
Sitting at the edge of 70,000 acres of wilderness this is the ideal location for hunting, fishing, camping, biking, hiking and canoeing and kayaking excursions. Transportation for you and your equipment to and/or from pick-up points can be arranged.
Our Marina gives you instant access to the Gulf and the Bay, and we’re the only place in the county where you can rent state-of-the-art Sundance flats.
You’re welcome to set out on your own or we can customize your adventure and have one of our many experts lead the way. These trained locals offer guidance as to what equipment and bait to use and where the current “hot spots” are for fish and game. Fishing is wildly popular in the Everglades, and whether you’re an expert or a novice, Snook, Redfish and Permit are just a few of the species you’re likely to hook into! Guided multi-day chartered fishing extravaganzas for up to 12 guests are available. Hunters are just minutes away from wild pigs, deer, and the small but challenging Osceola - one of the coveted Grand Slam species of turkey.
Transportation
We can provide customized transportation and van transfers for your kayaking and canoe trips, as well pick up you and your group from Fort Myers, Fort Lauderdale and Miami airports. Reservations are needed and are dependant on availability.
Ernest Hamilton Observation Tower
No trip to Everglades City would be complete without a climb to the top of the 75-foot tall Ernest Hamilton Observation Tower. Bring your camera and snap away at the spectacular views of Chokoloskee and the 10,000 Islands. While you’re there, take a hike along the nature trail for a closer look at amazing native plants and animals.
Everglades City Nature Trail
The 10,000 Islands are predominately made of Red Mangrove trees. This same species also surround the Oyster House Restaurant. Their tall arching roots, called prop roots, make them easily to identify. Mangroves are extremely important in tropical and subtropical regions providing not only protection and food but also breeding and nursery grounds for fish, shellfish, wildlife and birds. It is estimated that 75% of game fish and 90% of commercial fish in south Florida depend on the trees for survival. Mangroves are also ‘land builders’ as the roots trap mud, sand and silt that flow with the tide, gradually increasing the land around them. Come see them up close on our nature trail. Keep a sharp eye out for the small, harmless Mangrove Crabs that live on the trees as well as spectacular birds and other native wildlife.
Our Partners
Wooten’s Everglades Airboat Tours is the only company around that explores both the Everglades and Cypress Swamp. The airboat tour will take you through the marshes and mangroves, while the swamp buggy ride gives you the chance to see exotic plants and wildlife in their natural habitat.
For those of you who are interested in art, Big Cypress Gallery is a mere 30 minutes away, and features the black and white photography of the legendary Clyde Butcher, who is known as the “Ansel Adams of the Everglades”.
